The Dénouement

The argument of this book in a single paragraph

Briefly, the argument of this book is that real science is dead, and the main reason is that professional researchers are not even trying to seek the truth and speak the truth; and the reason for this is that professional ‘scientists’ no longer believe in the truth. – “Not Even Trying” by Professor Bruce Charlton, University of Buckingham Press: Buckingham, UK. 2012.

Although it is probable that the cartel which has hijacked the whole of science will probably retain control for one or two more decades, the collapse might be much closer. Professor Bruce Charlton of Buckingham University and Newcastle University broke rank. When we first met Professor Alex Yakovlev, who graduated from St. Petersburg University, he immediately pointed out to us that the collapse of the Soviet Union was not predictable. Similarly, the collapse of the “scientific” community is not predictable. But it cannot survive for more than a further decade or two. Charlton is one pointer. The other is the tearing up of their own rule books by the institutions, IET and IEEE. The persistent ignoring of their own Rules of Conduct and Code of Ethics, and also of the precepts of common decency, is a further indicator that the end for them is nigh.

The object of the present article is to warn high flyers in these organisations that they have to “come clean”, and offer an opinion as to whether the behaviour I report on is unacceptable. The clearest proof that we are in a crisis is the case of “The Catt Question” cattq. http://www.ivorcatt.co.uk/cattq.htm .

Catt was widely published in peer reviewed journals until 1967 http://www.ivorcatt.co.uk/x147.pdf and was Guest Lecturer in 14 universities in four countries http://www.ivorcatt.co.uk/x5cz2.htm . Then during the next 50 years he only had access to a university twice, and failed to publish in any peer reviewed journal for half a century.  http://async.org.uk/IvorCatt-edited.html .

Professor Bruce Charlton pointed out that the money flow into “science” has increased inexorably, now pulling in not only mediocre “scientists”, but also careerists who have no interest in science, but chose it as a career rather than accountancy or law, because the career prospects looked better. They do not even know that the object of science is to advance the art. According to Kuhn, this involves revolutions, which damage careers and reputations in the short term. New intakes into a scientific career are groomed by passing examinations in the science that is already known (by the examiners), not in the next revolutionary advance. Using peer review and other techniques, they stabilise the knowledge base and block advances.
