Following the notice you sent me some time ago about the forthcoming meeting of the CU Engineering Society when the members will be addressed by Mr Ivor Catt, I received by recorded delivery the enclosed material together with a copy of the latest edition of "The Catt Anomaly".
I am not able to take up Mr Catt's invitation to attend and speak at the meeting. He on his own will be able to give a sufficiently interesting talk to your members outlining the nature of the problem as he sees it and no doubt supplementing this with an entertaining account of how the academic and professional community has reacted.
The central issue as to whether there is anything wrong with Maxwell's equations is not I believe best resolved by a vote following some kind of public debate which might degenerate into a kind of Punch and Judy show. Almost twenty years ago, I invested a great deal of effort in correspondence with Mr Catt over his problem. My concluding letter of 10.11.83 which he copied to me in the recorded delivery package is enclosed and I am quite happy to let it stand as my statement on the matter. A more detailed solution of what Maxwell's equations would predict for the fields and current flow in the transmission line or wave guide conducting elements obviously depends on their frequency response and, depending on the sharpness of the pulse we are trying to propagate, includes issues like skin depth and plasma frequency. In a sufficiently simple (e.g. wave guide) geometry, solutions could perhaps be worked out by any of your members who are interested but of course there is no guarantee that Mr Catt will accept them.
